Commonly asked questions:
The water quality is good where we live, do we need a filter tap?:
All water in the UK is regulated and inspected frequently to ensure it is safe
to drink, this is taken for granted nowadays, however the taste of the water
is not regulated, and depends entirely on
where you live.
Even if you are lucky enough to live in an area where the water quality is good,
chlorine is still added for safety, the taste and odour created from adding
chlorine is the major difference that
most people notice or dislike.
Abode aquifier filters removes an average 86% of Chlorine taste and odour*.
*based on test data for ANSI / NSF standard 42, values in domestic use will
vary depending upon water quality.
Only 69% of consumers surveyed in March 2000 by the Drinking Water Inspectorate
(DWI) are satisfied with the quality of their tap water. That equates to 18
million people
who are dissatisfied with the quality of their water.
The main reason for dissatisfaction was found to be the taste and hardness
of their water
86% of those surveyed drink water from the tap, 6% bottled water only
and 6% milk and alternatives to water. That is approximately 8 million people
in the UK not drinking tap
water!
46% of those who do not drink tap water dont do so because they
dislike the taste and or smell. This proportion has not changed since the research
was first conducted in 1997.
33% of people believe there is a danger to health from things in tap
water. Chemicals, bacteria and bugs were the main concerns.

Can I use an Aquifier tap with a reverse osmosis (RO) unit?
Reverse osmosis is a process of filtering water very efficiently; whilst RO
units and filters are expensive they do filter the water so well that it does
leave the water tasting bland, however a
small number of customers prefer or have need of a RO filtering system.
RO filter can substitute the Aquifier filter cartridge but must use a _
pipe for the filtered water outlet, the RO unit must also be capable of delivering
the filtered water at the minimum pressure
stated for each filter tap model.
Can I use the tap with a water softener?
Yes, Aquifier taps are ideal for use in conjunction with a water softener.
It is not advised to drink softened water due to the increased sodium levels
and taste, normally a separate new drinking water tap is added next to the sink.
An Aquifier tap will replace and
combine the existing kitchen tap and separate drinking water tap all in one.
The hot and unfiltered cold water should come from a softened source; the filtered
water must come from an unsoftened source however.
Can I use the filter Aquifier tap with water from any source?
No, in summary the water must be safe to drink from its source. You should only
use Aquifier filters on municipally supplied microbiologically safe potable
drinking water.
How does the filter reduce the effects of hard water?
The filter contains a harmless chemical that temporarily reverses the polarity
of your water, this change only lasts for an hour or two at maximum, this change
does not effect the taste of the
water but helps to prevent the scale building up on cookware when heated.
The softening capacity of the filter is not its primary function and best suited
to low scale areas, in very hard water areas the scale function will fade before
the GAC element, customers in a high
scale area should either add a second inline scale filter or replace their filter
cartridge more often.
Following the tips below will help the anti-scale performance of your
Aquifier filter:
1) Empty kettles and pans after use, only use as much water as your need. This
is less wasteful
and means the water is not allowed to touch the cookware once the polarity charge
has faded.
2) Reduce the flow rate through your filter, the water will not flow through
your tap as quickly but
has more time in contact with the filter improving performance
3) Flush the tap though for a moment before use, this will disperse any water
that is uncharged
within the system
4) Replace the filter more frequently or add a second in line filter specifically
designed to reduce
scale (several such additional filters are available on the market)
Hard water is typically scaled using Clarke degrees. The higher the value the
more hard the water is. You can find how hard your water is by either testing
your water or contacting your
local water provider.
How do I change my Aquifier Safelock filter?
Each replacement cartridge comes with complete instructions on replacing your
filter and should
take less than 5 minutes, The advice below is a summary of the 4 simple steps.
abode SAFELOCK cartridge replacement steps
How does the Aquifier filter perform compared to other brands?
This is mainly a subjective matter and relies on the person and the original
quality of water available; subsequently we feel it is not fair to offer such
comparisons.
The following information is available on our Aquifier filter system however:
• Triple stage filter:
Stage 1 - cellulose fibre sediment filter – this pre- filter become progressively
finer trapping more and more dirt & sediment and helps to prevent accidental
blockage.
Stage 2 - Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) – removes unwanted tastes, odours
& chlorine
Stage 3 – Scale crystals – treats the water reducing the effects of ‘hard water’
• Minimum & Maximum water pressure rating (filter only) 1.8 - 5.5 bar
• 5 micron rated filter, note a human hair is apx. 70 microns wide.
• 5,678 Litres or 6 months maximum cartridge life
Aquifier safelock filter information
• Supplied with speedfit fittings and isolation valve
• Quick action quarter turn Safelock filter change system
Activated carbon filters are most effective for removing organic contaminants
from water. Because organic chemicals are most often responsible for taste,
odour and colour problems, GAC filtration can be a good way to improve aesthetically
objectionable water.
The GAC is produced by heating a number of carbonaceous substances (e.g. cellulose
based substances such as wood or coconut shell) in the absence of air.
Creating safe and highly porous and absorbent material. The cartridge is packed
with granules of activated carbon. When water passes through the filter, the
numerous carbon granules trap particles and remove dissolved substances in the
water. Carbon will also reduce levels of other impurities. These are as follows:
chemicals removed by safelock cartridge
Can I use a chiller unit in conjunction with the tap
Yes, Several companies manufacture refrigeration units to cool the water before
it passes through the filter, this can be useful during our brief summer months
when the incoming water
temperature rises.
The chiller unit must also be capable of delivering the filtered water at the
minimum pressure stated for each filter tap model and should use pushfit pipe
for ease of connectivity.
